Credit/Debit cards now accepted

The William A. Blakley Library is pleased to announce that credit and debit cards are now accepted online for the payment of library fines and fees. Library patrons wishing to pay their balance should first log into their Horizon account, determine the exact amount of fines, fees, and or lost book charges, then go to https://commerce.cashnet.com/udlibrary to make that payment.

Payments will be posted to the patron's account by the end of the following business day. Students needing expedited service for registration, graduation, or release of transcripts may print off a copy of the payment receipt and bring it to the circulation desk for immediate processing.

The Mobile Library

The William A. Blakley Library is pleased to announce the launch of our mobile library site. The new mobile platform gives users the opportunity to search databases and subject guides, find items through our catalog, access online reserves, get reference assistance, and find general information about the library.

Users accessing the library's site will automatically be redirected to the mobile platform.

eBooks have really arrived!

E-Books have arrived big time at the William A. Blakley Library: over 7000 titles have been added to the catalog this summer!

The titles are in the Online Public Access Catalog and can be accessed by clicking the link from the catalog. In some cases a free user account must be created to access the material. How to tell if the title is an ebook? It will have an [electronic resource] format note found in the title record. In most cases, ebooks are meant to be read online and are not available for download for offline reading.

The vast majority of new eBooks comes from Books24x7 and are in business and marketing subject areas. New titles are added monthly. Readers who have not yet registered with Books24x7 will be required to create a free account. Readers will be able to create lists of books, bookmark sections and even keep online notes.

A substantial number have been added to the literature subject areas from Gale Virtual Reference Library. Some of these titles can be found in print in the Reference section of the library.

Through Amigos Library Services, the Library has access to over 30,000 titles from EBSCO eCollections, formerly known as NetLibrary. Please note that EBSCO is still in the process of assimilating NetLibrary and clicking a NetLibrary title may bring you to the EBSCOHost Database selection screen. The ebook collection is at the bottom. These titles are in a wide variety of subjects.

The Library also has holdings from Clio and Greenwood ebook collections.

Library Inventory

Ever wonder why books aren't on the shelves in their correct location? Ever been looking for a book that should be on the shelf but isn't?

The Blakley Library will begin our inventory of the circulating and reference collection. During this inventory, every book is scanned, shelved in the correct location and collection, and checked for errors. This allows us to make sure the books are available for use.

The process will take about 6 weeks to complete. During this time, please do not remove inventory cards placed in the shelves. If you need help finding materials during this time, please ask at the circulation desk.

National Library Week

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and promoted by libraries across the country each April. This is a time to recognize the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
Join The William A. Blakley Library in celebrating National Library Week (NLW) April 10-16, 2011. The Library proudly presents a colorful and intriguing display derived from the theme of NLW: Create Your Own Story.
Included in the display are selected books written by students from the University of Dallas who have received the "Clodecott Award" in the Department of Education.

New Catholic Encyclopedia

The New Catholic Encyclopedia is now online! This 15 volume, second edition features revised and new articles. Among the 12,000 entries in the encyclopedia are articles on theology, philosophy, history, literary figures, saints, musicians and much more.

Access to the New Catholic Encyclopedia online is limited to current students, faculty, and staff of the University. Off-campus access is available with a valid network ID and password.

Food For Fines

Do you owe book fines in the library? Would you like to clear those fines and do a good deed -- all at the same time? Well, now's your chance!

The William A. Blakley Library, along with Campus Ministry are sponsoring the 5th annual Food for Fines. From April 8 - 18th, patrons of the William A. Blakley Library are invited to help the community and themselves by donating non-perishable food items in lieu of paying library fines. Donated items will benefit the St. Jude's Catholic Church food pantry.

For each non-perishable food donation you make, we'll reduce your fines by $1, to a maximum of $50. Just bring your donations to the Circulation Desk at any time during regular hours.

Soup, canned meats, canned vegetables and fruits, cereals, dried fruits, canned juices, paper and cleaning products, personal hygiene products (soaps, toothpaste, etc.) evaporated and powdered milk, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, baking mixes, pasta, and rice are particularly needed.

Food for fines is only good on overdue fines. Lost book charges, TexShare fines, or other fees associated with your library account are not eligible.

Find the way: continue past the entrance on the main level of the library, straight ahead, then to the right, and see the display case filled with delights.

New feature in Business Source Complete

Now you can watch lectures from the Harvard Business School Faculty Seminar Series videos. “All lectures are captured from executive education programs, and offer groundbreaking ideas, insightful research, and practical advice on management issues. The videos contain a table of content allowing the selection of a specific topic. Most lectures provide a transcript in PDF format”. These videos are available in the database Business Source Complete on the library website.

Search options are:
1-enter subject term, such as economics, and limit by the Publication Name, i.e. Harvard Business School Faculty Seminar Series
2-click on the More button on the top menu bar, select Business Videos/Images from the drop down menu, enter Harvard Business School Faculty Seminar Series in the search box, and browse through the 55 videos.

Exhibit: Historical language and literary works

Special works are on display in the library, which include: an original volume of the first historical and critical dictionary from the eighteenth century by Bayle; selections from the first encyclopedia in the first century by Pliny; and to reflect the early twentieth century, lectures by Stein. In addition, some illustrated publications embellish language and literature bringing the two to life. Stop by the library, 1st floor, and get a glimpse of our past heritage.

Library Celebrates Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week. BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections.

ARTstor Demo

There will be a demo of ARTstor today from 1pm-2pm in the Blakley Research and Information Center, aka the BRIC, 1st floor of the William A. Blakley Library. This database encompasses over 100 thousand images from institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, scholars, and special collection in libraries. It will be useful for many disciplines. Cirulating Collection Inventory

During the summer, the Blakley Library will be doing an inventory of the entire circulating collection. This process helps us locate lost materials, find any items that have been mishelved, and ensure that materials are easily located.

If you're in the circulating stacks this summer and see a card indicating that the inventory is being done in that area, please be mindful not to move the card from that location. Otherwise, our statistics will not be accurate.
